Breakfast bar for baby buffalo |
Left the State Game Lodge this morning at dawn to drive the Wildlife Loop through Custer State Park, SD. The following are some videos of the great wildlife encounters we had. Except for our new friends, we had the road to ourselves as we headed to Custer City. Besides these critters, we also saw Mule Deer, White Tail Deer and Prairie Dogs.

Rush Hour - Big Horn Sheep |
In Custer City, we stopped for breakfast and the post office to drop off and pick up parcels. It's such a cool building with the original P.O. boxes and customer service windows. Artists also decorated buffalo stationed at each corner along Main Street. All in all, it was a lovely little town and seemed very real.

Custer City, SD - Sidewalk Art entitled "Riders on The Storm" |
So, we headed west on Rt. 16 into Wyoming and then onto I-90 across the state to Cody, Wyoming and Yellowstone Park. Eastern Wyoming is UG-LY. Lots of vast, scrappy, arid terrain lined with RRs and power lines, dotted with (natural gas?) wells and a rare house. We can't imagine who would live here, but do know that one of the communities that had 10 residents (according to the sign upon entering town) actually had its own post office. No wonder, stamps cost so much.

Buffalo Bill's Irma Hotel, Cody, WY |
Finally made it to Cody and found one of the few rooms left in Town at the very modest Cody Motor Lodge (yes, they still exist)! William "Buffalo Bill" Cody founded the town and built the Irma Hotel to cater to RR guests visiting the west. The hotel was really well preserved with its original bar, booths, artwork and detailing. So, we couldn't resist enjoying a dinner of Buffalo Prime Rib there before heading over to the Cody Nite Rodeo.
