Mormon Temple |
Day two in SLC proved to be just as interesting as day one. Once again, we walked to Temple Square for a noon organ concert in the Temple. You would never guess that the organ had 11,623 pipes. Nonetheless, the concert was nice and two girls (Latter Day Saints missionaries), one from Germany & the other from Italy, visited with us about the city and their experiences here. I asked them what they do in their spare time and the Italian said, "shop." Girls, it seems, are the same the world over! We toured the visitor's center there and were able to see inside the Mormon Temple, even if it was just a model. Fascinating building, but not open to anyone but a Mormon "in good standing". No one was able to really able to define that, but we suspect it has to do with how much you tithe!

Lamb's Grill - lunch counter coolers |
From Temple Square, we wandered down the main street and grabbed a bite of lunch at the venerable Lamb's Grill, a city landmark and Utah's oldest continually operating restaurant. Talk about cool interiors; it's long, narrow dining room began with a lunch counter that ran along the front half and is the coolest we've ever seen. Most of the details are unchanged since it first began operating.
I've always viewed a sandwich as a means to an end as lunch goes, but I'll have to say that the "Pilgrim Sandwich" they serve is by far the best sandwich I've ever had. Nothing special it seemed, a turkey sandwich with stuffing, cranberry sauce and fixin's on ciabatta bread, but I have to say, it made my mouth swoon!
After lunch it was back to the hotel, via the boulangerie for a pastry...or two, to pack up for the next leg of our trip.
